These are gross fee income, not salary or take-home: expenses of roughly 20–40% come out before tax does. They are medians for the self-employed Bar in England and Wales at 0–3 years, and barristers who did not renew their practising certificate are absent from the figures, so the people who left are not counted. The report publishes these split by gender and gives no combined figure.

Before any of that there is pupillage, where the minimum award from January 2026 is  .

  1. Bar Council, Gross earnings at the self-employed Bar, 2025 report covering calendar year 2024. Median gross fee income, 0–3 years PQE. Published annually.
  2. Bar Standards Board, minimum pupillage award from 1 January 2026. Reset each January.
